Erotic Roots of the sexy maid outfit

Allegedly, the maid outfit came from the erotic anime Cream Lemon, specifically Part 11: Black Cat Mansion (1986) (NSFW by the way)

This featured maid costumes in a fetish/erotic context.

This is sometimes regarded as one of the first maid-costume appearances in Japanese animation. 

Over time, maid characters appeared more broadly — not just in erotic sense.

But its also cute to be a maid.

The most recent example being Momo Ayase from Dandadan.

The “Meido” Trope in Anime & Manga

In anime & manga, the “meido” (maid) trope is well established.

According to TV Tropes’ Meido entry, a maid character is often a young, attractive woman in a maid outfit — sometimes modest, sometimes exaggerated.

 The trope also allows for fanservice and romantic or hierarchical tension. 

Many maid characters address their “master” (主人, shujin or goshujin-sama).

and display behaviors of deference or loyalty (“obedient, caring, attentive”).

This plays to some people’s tendency for dominanace.

The Maid dress & headpiece

This dress can be a simple black and white dress. However, there are a lot of varieties. There are the lace maid, where more lace is used.

Depends on how sexy you are, there a large variety of apron types.

But in short, there are many types avaialble: from full stocking to gerner belt and even bodystockings.
